I will speak with Putin, but only when the time is appropriate, Scholz ponders

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he intends to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin “at the right moment,” implying a resumption of dialogue after a dramatic deterioration in ties between the two nations in the aftermath of Russian aggression in Ukraine.

“My last phone conversation with Putin was a long time ago. “However, I intend to contact him again when the time is right,” Scholz stated.

In early December, the two leaders spoke on the phone for approximately an hour for the last time. Scholz requested the Kremlin’s leader at the time to remove Moscow’s soldiers from the neighboring nation, but instead received the Russian president’s claims that the West is pursuing “destructive” policies against his country.

Germany has provided Ukraine with 18 Leopard 2 tanks to assist Kiev in dealing with a Russian invasion that began last year, but has declined to supply fighter fighters in order to avoid worsening relations with Moscow.

In this regard, the leaders of the G7 developed countries recently agreed to prolong the sanctions. The group stated in a joint statement that the additional curbs would hurt “exports of industrial equipment, tools, and other technologies that Russia uses to rebuild its war machine.”
