The deputy commander of the United Nations Command (UNC) announced on Monday that talks have commenced with North Korea concerning US Army Private Travis King, who crossed the border between North and South Korea last week within the demilitarized zone.
King is believed to be the first US soldier to make such a crossing into North Korea since 1982.
He had a prior record of assault, was facing disciplinary action for his behavior, and was scheduled to return to the US on the day preceding the incident.
