Lithuania and Poland may close their borders with Belarus

The Deputy Interior Minister of Lithuania, Arnolds Abramavicius, has said that his country and Poland may close their borders with Belarus

Both countries have said they face a growing threat from the presence of troops from the Russian mercenary group Wagner in Belarus, a Russian ally, the Telegraph reports.

“The discussions are real. The possibility of closing the border exists,” Abramavicius said at a press conference.

Polish government officials met in a Polish border town on Thursday to assess the current situation, he said.

Abramavicius said about 1,200 Wagner Group troops are in Belarus, and the vast majority of them are at a training ground in Osipovichi, near the Polish border.

He said that although Wagner did not pose a military threat to Poland, there was a “possibility of provocation”.
