“American citizens in Belarus must leave immediately,” the message from the American embassy said today
It comes as many countries, including Lithuania, have closed border crossings with the country as it welcomes a growing Russian presence.
“Consider leaving via the remaining border points with Lithuania and Latvia, or by plane,” the statement said.
He also warned citizens not to travel to Belarus, due to its support of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its limited ability to help individuals living or traveling there.
He said that if someone decides to travel to the country, they should not rely on the US government for assistance.
Four border crossings with Lithuania remain open, while the government – along with Poland and Latvia – have said further closures are likely.
Last month, Vladimir Putin met with the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko.
The pair met for talks in St Petersburg hours after an airstrike on a cathedral in the Ukrainian city of Odesa.
They discussed strategic issues related to the war and President Putin’s “Union State” proposal – where Belarus becomes a “partner state” or satellite of Russia.
