Israel later denied that any incursion had taken place, and locals of a village close to the border who had been advised to barricade themselves inside and lock their doors and windows were told they could once more venture outside.
Hezbollah, a heavily armed, Iran-backed militia in Lebanon, later claimed responsibility for attacks on many border regions in retaliation for Israeli attacks on south Lebanese towns earlier in the day.
According to the military statement, there had been an explosion at the nearby border barrier, which had only suffered minor damage.
