The Pentagon has announced another round of military support to Ukraine in order to protect its airspace from Russian planes, drones, and missiles.
According to a June 13 statement from the Department of Defense, the package includes “key capabilities to assist Ukraine’s efforts to retake its sovereign territory and to support Ukraine’s air defenders as they bravely protect Ukraine’s soldiers, civilians, and critical infrastructure, as well as artillery, anti-armor systems, and munitions.”
The success of Ukraine’s fledgling counteroffensive is unknown.
However, given the unpredictability and harshness of war, the Pentagon stated that it is attempting to satisfy “immediate battlefield needs as well as long-term security assistance requirements.”
Among other things, the new package includes more munitions for NASAMS air defense systems, more Stinger mobile air defense systems, more GMLRS missiles for HIMARS launchers, as well as’secure tactical communications support equipment’ and 15 combat vehicles of Bradley infantry and 10 Stryker armored personnel carriers.
According to the Pentagon, the aid package is valued up to $325 million.
