The ruling party leads in the Polish elections, but the opposition claims victory

Poland’s ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party remains the most powerful force even after Sunday’s election, according to the latest polls

However, three opposition parties are celebrating the possibility of forming a new government.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki‘s nationalist party won 36.8 percent of the vote, according to polls conducted by the Ipsos Institute on Sunday evening.

The liberal opposition party Civil Coalition, of former Prime Minister Donald Tusk, ranked second with 31.6 percent of the vote.

According to forecasts, the PiS party will not be able to form the government alone, in the absence of sufficient seats in the assembly.

Tusk has considered himself a winner.

“I have never been happier for second place. Poland has won, democracy has won, this is the end of the government of the PiS party”, he said in the evening.

The leader of the ruling party, Jarosław Kaczyński, has said they will wait for the latest results.

The formation of the government in Poland is expected to take a long time. The final result is not expected until Tuesday.
