TÜRKIYE, Oct 23 (Telegraph News) – Soon after Russia initiated a war in Ukraine in February 2022, Finland and Sweden requested NATO membership.

Turkey earlier authorized Finland’s NATO membership but stated that it was waiting on Sweden to follow through on a trilateral memorandum inked in Madrid in June 2022 to resolve Ankara’s security concerns.

Turkish politicians, notably Erdogan, have frequently stated that Sweden’s potential NATO membership is entirely up to the Turkish parliament.

All NATO nations, including Turkey, a member of the alliance for over 70 years, must approve any new members.
