Austria Wins Eurovision 2025 with JJ’s ‘Wasted Love’

Austria has been crowned the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, thanks to an emotional and powerful performance of the song “Wasted Love” by rising star JJ. The 24-year-old countertenor captivated both juries and audiences across Europe with his stirring vocals and cinematic stage presentation, earning a combined total of 436 points.

The win marks Austria’s third Eurovision victory, following past successes in 1966 and 2014. JJ’s performance stood out for its unique fusion of classical and pop elements, blending his operatic countertenor voice with modern production and emotionally charged lyrics that explore the pain and beauty of unrequited love.

Co-written by JJ, Teodora Špirić (also known as Teya), and composer Thomas Turner, “Wasted Love” featured a dramatic black-and-white visual aesthetic on stage. The performance reached a powerful climax as JJ knelt to retrieve a symbolic crystal microphone, underscoring the song’s message about finding strength in vulnerability and heartbreak.

JJ’s win was closely contested, with Austria narrowly beating Israel’s Yuval Raphael, who finished in second place with his uplifting ballad “New Day Will Rise”. Estonia’s Tommy Cash came in third with his genre-bending track “Espresso Macchiato”, while Spain’s entry “Esa Diva” by Melody placed 24th.

The emotional resonance of “Wasted Love”, combined with JJ’s vocal precision and theatrical presentation, won over viewers and juries alike, solidifying the performance as one of the standout moments in recent Eurovision history.

JJ’s victory is being celebrated as a testament to the artistic diversity of the Eurovision stage, showcasing how classical influences can blend with contemporary styles to create something both timeless and fresh.
