Germany’s Merz Reaffirms NATO’s Resolve to Defend Alliance Territory During Lithuania Visit

VILNIUS, Lithuania — German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, during a visit to Lithuania, declared NATO’s unwavering commitment to defend every inch of alliance territory. His statement came as Germany formally inaugurated its first permanent foreign military deployment since World War II, a significant step in strengthening NATO’s eastern defenses.

The newly established 45th Panzer Brigade, set to reach full operational capacity by 2027, will consist of around 5,000 troops. Stationed permanently in Lithuania, the brigade represents a cornerstone of NATO’s enhanced deterrence strategy in response to growing tensions with Russia.

Speaking alongside Lithuanian officials, Chancellor Merz emphasized the importance of collective defense, invoking NATO’s Article 5 as the foundation of the alliance’s unity. “Germany stands unwaveringly on the side of the Baltic states,” Merz stated. “This brigade is a signal of solidarity, readiness, and resolve.”

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda welcomed the German deployment, calling it a milestone for regional security. In a parallel move, Lithuania has pledged to raise its defense spending to over 5% of its GDP, making it the highest among NATO members and signaling its commitment to shared defense obligations.

The 45th Panzer Brigade, also referred to as the “Lithuania Brigade,” marks a significant evolution in Germany’s postwar defense policy. Its presence is aimed at reinforcing NATO’s eastern flank and ensuring a rapid and coordinated response to any potential threats in the region.

With a major NATO summit on the horizon, discussions are expected to focus on defense investment, force readiness, and strategies to address emerging security challenges. Chancellor Merz’s visit and firm messaging underscore Germany’s central role in shaping the alliance’s future posture and ensuring collective defense remains ironclad.
