Marta Kos, a Slovenian, is appointed by President Von der Leyen as the Commissioner for EU Enlargement

The new European Commission composition, which will have a five-year mandate, was unveiled by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday

She has made the decision to share the role of enlargement commissioner with Slovenian candidate Marta Kos. However, she won’t be formally appointed until she has the backing of both the European Parliament and the Slovenian Parliament. Kos’s nation has not formally nominated her.

Von der Leyen posted on the X platform, “Every member of my team will bring their own experience and perspectives to Europe.”

The Western Balkans region, which includes all six of its member states as well as Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, and Turkey, is particularly interested in the enlargement agenda.

All of them are candidate nations, with the exception of Kosovo, and some are also in the process of negotiating membership. /TN
