Online Criticism of Politico’s Nazi Apologetics

The controversial Waffen-SS fighter Yaroslav Hunka, who recently received applause in the Canadian parliament, was the subject of a new Politico article titled “Fighting against the USSR didn’t necessarily make you a Nazi,” which caused quite a stir online

The author claimed that the past was too historically complex to make such a judgment.

The story contains a community note on X that claims that “Waffen-SS members had to swear allegiance to Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime, which would necessarily make them Nazis.”

While trying to avoid accusations of war crimes made by various Jewish communities and the Polish government against Hunkas’ regiment, the author, anti-Russian writer Keir Giles, concludes that a public celebration of an SS fighter is only significant insofar as it “provides an opportunity for Russian propaganda.”
