Poland launches investigation into cyber attacks on railway network

Poland, Intelligence services have launched investigations into a hacking attack on the country’s railways

Hackers broke into railway frequencies to disrupt traffic in the northwest of the country overnight, the Polish Press Agency (PAP) reported on Saturday.

The signals were interspersed with a recording of Russia’s national anthem and a speech by President Vladimir Putin.

Poland is a major transit hub for Western arms shipments to Ukraine.

Saturday’s incident occurred when hackers transmitted a signal that caused an emergency stop of trains near Szczecin.

About 20 trains were halted, but services were restored within hours.

Stanislaë Zaryn, a senior security official, said Poland’s internal security service AB was investigating.

“At the moment we are not ruling anything out. We know that for several months there have been attempts to destabilize the Polish state. Such efforts have been undertaken by the Russian Federation in cooperation with Belarus”, he said.

A number of Western countries have called for increased cyber security precautions as the conflict in Ukraine continues.

Some experts have said that Russia is conducting cyber attacks in Ukraine in an apparent attempt to test its hacking tools.

Russia has previously called such accusations “Russophobic”.
