Putin and Trump to Meet “In the Coming Days,” Kremlin Confirms

MOSCOW, August 7, 2025 — The Kremlin has confirmed that President Vladimir Putin of Russia and President Donald Trump of the United States will hold a bilateral summit “in the coming days”, with final logistical preparations currently underway. According to Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov, the venue has already been agreed upon and will be disclosed shortly.

This high-level meeting marks the first face-to-face encounter between the two leaders since President Trump resumed office in January 2025. It comes on the heels of a three-hour session between Putin and Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, which Russian officials described as highly constructive.

Although Trump has expressed openness to a trilateral summit including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russian authorities have indicated that the upcoming talks will focus exclusively on U.S.–Russia relations, without Ukraine’s participation at this stage.

✦ Key themes expected to dominate the summit:

  • Russia–Ukraine conflict: Exploring potential pathways to ceasefire talks, with Putin reportedly considering limited measures such as an air truce.
  • Economic statecraft: Washington is preparing to levy secondary sanctions—particularly targeting countries buying Russian oil—in parallel with escalating tariffs on Indian imports.
  • Strategic messaging: Both leaders may use the meeting to signal broader geopolitical intentions, including future bilateral or regional cooperation.

Financial markets in Moscow reacted positively, with indicators such as the MOEX index and the ruble showing early gains on the news.

Despite diplomatic momentum, analysts remain cautious—warning that even productive talks may yield limited progress unless both sides commit to substantive concessions. Meanwhile, Ukraine has underscored the need for independent security guarantees and coordinated involvement from global partners moving forward.
