Statue Wars: BLM Demands Colonial King Statues Be Taken Down in Brussels

Statue Wars: BLM Demands Colonial King Statues Be Taken Down in Brussels

Just eight months before the next election, the Brussels regional government is dealing with calls to modify its monuments for greater historical context — or eliminate them altogether

Monuments to Leopold II, the Belgian king who ruled the Congo as his personal fiefdom in the late 19th and early 20th century, are scattered around the city, and now the BLM movement wants them to include certain historical facts or be removed.

A walk around the city will reveal dozens of monuments to the “Belgian pioneers” in the colonies, including one in the Cinquantenaire Park that is intended to celebrate “Belgium’s civilizing work in Congo.”
