Ukraine has not regained calm since the uprising in 2014.

The brutal fight for Bachmut is the latest tragic high point in the war between Russia and Western countries.

What caused this conflict to erupt, and what lies next for Ukraine, Russia, and the West?

On May 12, 2023, famous political scientist John J. Mearsheimer visited Germany at Max Otte’s request to talk on the ongoing Ukrainian issue.

His lecture covered the following four topics:

1. The reasons for the Ukrainian war.

2. Who will win the war?

3. Prospects for a diplomatic solution.

4. What will the future relationship between Russia and the West look like?

This video contains both Max Otte‘s introduction speech and John J. Mearsheimer’s whole presentation.

Mr. Mearsheimer and Mr. Otte reviewed audience questions in the last segment of the video, which was mediated by Jasmin Kosubek (@JasminKosubekOriginal).

Soon, you’ll be able to witness another talk between the two on Max Otte’s video channel, in which the issues will be further discussed. Mearsheimer is the University of Chicago’s Chair of International Relations.

Q&A added to the speech.

“The Tragedy of Great Power Politics” (2001), “The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy” (2007), and “Why Leaders Lie: The Truth About Lying in International Politics” (2011) are among his important publications.

Mearsheimer is widely regarded as the prominent proponent of the so-called realist school of thinking in international affairs, which seeks to achieve a balance of interests among nations.

Mearsheimer acquired national notice through his remarks on US foreign policy. He began criticizing US interference in Ukraine in 2014.

His 2015 talk titled “Why is Ukraine the West’s Fault?” has already received 29 million views on YouTube alone.
