Israeli Airstrike Kills Lebanese Troops as France Rallies Support for Lebanon’s Army

October 24, 2024 – An Israeli airstrike targeting Hezbollah-controlled areas in southern Lebanon has reportedly killed several Lebanese soldiers, escalating tensions along the volatile border. According to military sources, the strike was part of a broader Israeli campaign aimed at disrupting Hezbollah’s financial and military networks. However, Lebanese officials say the bombing inadvertently struck army personnel stationed nearby.

The deadly incident has provoked outrage in Lebanon, with officials condemning the attack as a violation of the country’s sovereignty. The Lebanese Army has launched an investigation, while calls for restraint have echoed across the region to prevent further escalation.

The French government is leading efforts within the European Union to provide additional support to the Lebanese Army, which is grappling with dwindling resources due to the country’s economic crisis. Paris has also called for immediate diplomatic engagement to de-escalate hostilities between Israel and Lebanon.

Israel has defended its recent strikes, arguing that Hezbollah’s use of civilian infrastructure, including military bases, leaves no choice but to take action. Meanwhile, Hezbollah has vowed to retaliate, further increasing the risk of a wider regional conflict.

The international community, including the United Nations, has urged both sides to avoid further provocations as Lebanon’s fragile stability hangs in the balance.
