The United States is close to sanctioning the supply of long-range missile systems to Ukraine.
The ATACMS missile system has a range of around 305 kilometers, allowing Ukrainian forces to strike Russian targets deep beyond the front lines.
US President Joe Biden has not yet approved the transfer, in part because US officials are concerned that Ukraine could use the system to target Russian territory, perhaps escalating the crisis into a larger confrontation with the West.
Otherwise, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been pleading with Western countries to supply him heavy weaponry such as the ATACMS missile system since the start of the war.
However, Western officials have expressed concern that the conflict in Ukraine may extend to other nations.
And Zelensky is still calling for the supply of advanced Western aircraft like the F-16.
