The EU opposes the use of artificial intelligence to “hire and fire” employees

Ursula von der Leyen, the head of the European Commission, has warned against the unrestrained use of artificial intelligence to “hire and fire” employees.


Von der Leyen spoke on the European Union’s (EU) proposals to govern artificial intelligence systems at the 15th Congress of the European Trade Union Confederation.

She stated that 25% of European corporations want to utilize artificial intelligence tools in human resource management, and that some of these technologies may be used for automatic dismissals.

“Every algorithm is created by a programmer, and this person has a background and biases.” As a result, none of the algorithms are without prejudice,” von der Leyen remarked, according to AA.

She went on to say that “we must be very, very clear” as a result of this.

“An algorithm should not be used to fire anyone.” This is not possible. “We need rules,” stated von der Leyen.

She stressed that the EU Commission is keeping a close eye on developments and may take additional steps to control the use of algorithms in human resource management.
