Lithuania’s ruling Conservative party announced on Friday that it will propose a sudden election for parliament and that the cabinet may quit if the request is denied.
The presidium of the Fatherland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD), which convened on Friday, voted to hold early elections and, if the Seimas is against it, to consider the Government’s resignation.
Conservative Party Chairman Gabrielius Landsbergis said during a news conference on Friday morning that the party’s presidium will convene. He stated that he seeks to recommend the resignation of the whole government and seek for early Seimas elections.
The TS-LKD presidium meeting, which began remotely at 2 p.m., lasted around three hours. It was announced about 5 p.m. that the Conservative ruling backed the three-point resolution.
The first point entails recommending to the TS-LKD faction in the Seimas to submit and seek to adopt changes in the regulation of municipal council operating expenses, which would introduce a common standard of transparency and accountability in all Lithuanian municipalities, as soon as possible.
In the second point, it was determined to start announcing early Seimas elections as soon as feasible.
The third point contemplates evaluating the question of the government’s resignation if the push for early elections is not supported. /LRT
