Viktor Orban: ‘poor Ukrainians’ cannot win against Russia

According to the AFP network, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated today that Ukraine cannot win the war with Russia and urged for peace talks with Moscow.

The Hungarian leader, who has often battled with European Union members on the topic of war and refuses to offer military help to his neighbor Ukraine, reiterated his appeals for a ceasefire.

“It is clear that the military solution is not working,” he said at the Qatar Economic Forum, adding that the Russian incursion was the result of “weak Western diplomacy.”

“If we look at the numbers, the context, and the fact that NATO is not ready to send troops there, it is clear that the poor Ukrainians will not win on the battlefield.” “This is my position,” Orban added.

The Hungarian prime minister, who has close relations to the Kremlin, is likely to be the only European leader who has not visited Kiev in the last year.

Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy leader, revealed today that Hungary has declined to provide military help to Ukraine, but he remains confident that it will.

“Ukraine is certainly an important country,” Orban said in his address, “but in long-term strategic terms, the security of Europe itself is at stake here.” Without the United States, Europe has no defense infrastructure. This war can only be ended if Russia and the United States strike a direct accord.”

Orban also slammed European politicians for being “overly intellectual.” “Before applying to NATO, Sweden should improve relations with Hungary,” he continued.

Stockholm has frequently criticized Orban’s attitude on the rule of law, according to Budapest.

Orban is also in Qatar to negotiate the acquisition of liquefied natural gas, and Qatar is apparently interested in investing in Budapest’s airport.
