Kyiv, October 22, 2024 – A Russian missile attack on the northeastern city of Sumy has claimed the lives of three people, including a child, according to Ukrainian officials. The strike hit a residential area, causing extensive damage to homes and leaving several others injured.
Local authorities reported that the missile struck late in the afternoon, reducing parts of the neighborhood to rubble. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, rescuing survivors and extinguishing fires. However, the impact was devastating, killing two adults and a child on the spot. Several other civilians were taken to nearby hospitals with injuries.
“This is yet another act of terror targeting civilians,” a spokesperson for Ukraine’s presidential office stated, condemning the attack. Ukrainian officials argue that Russia has repeatedly used indiscriminate strikes against civilian infrastructure across the country since the war began.
Sumy, which lies close to the Russian border, has frequently found itself on the front lines, suffering from both missile attacks and artillery shelling. The region has seen intensified bombardments in recent weeks, raising fears of further escalations.
The Russian government has not commented on the strike, maintaining its broader narrative that it only targets military infrastructure. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials are calling for stronger international support, urging allies to expedite the delivery of air defense systems to prevent further civilian casualties.
This attack adds to the rising civilian death toll in Ukraine and underscores the growing humanitarian toll of the conflict as it continues unabated.
