Putin ready to start peace talks with Ukraine

In Vladimir Putin’s public statements, he claims he’s ready to end the war and wants peace talks, but they’re being blocked by Kiev

The Russian president has repeated Moscow’s position that it is ready for peace talks, but that Ukraine is refusing such a thing, reports Sky News.

Putin was responding to comments by the chairman of the African Union Commission (AUC), Moussa Faki Mahamat, who said at a Russia-Africa summit in St. Petersburg that “the AUC attaches great importance to the integrity and sovereignty of states” and “the peaceful resolution of crises through compromise”.

Kiev has said it is not prepared to enter into negotiations with Russia, while the country, which launched a full-scale occupation 17 months ago, controls a fifth of Ukrainian territory.

Russia has repeatedly said that any talks must take into account the “new reality” created on the ground.

Otherwise, Ukraine presented a peace plan months ago that envisages the complete withdrawal of the Russian state and the return of territories annexed by Russia.
