Nov 4th (Visegrád 24) — Pakistan announced in early October that it would deport an estimated 1.7 million Afghan refugees without valid residency status. They were given until November 1 to leave the country themselves, after which the Pakistani authorities would intervene. Illegal Afghans can now be arrested, placed in closed centers for a few days, and then deported to Afghanistan.
The interior ministry of the radical Islamist Taliban, who rule Afghanistan, said around 57,000 Afghans were “forcibly deported” from Pakistan between Friday evening and Saturday morning.
Millions of Afghans have moved to Pakistan amid decades of war, making the country one of the world’s largest refugee-hosting countries. But tensions between the two neighboring countries have increased recently. Islamabad accuses the government in Kabul of being too lenient on Islamic militants carrying out attacks from Afghanistan on Pakistani security forces and civilians.
