FBI: Thousands of distant IT workers paid money to North Korea to support their nuclear programme

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has uncovered a startling revelation, suggesting that thousands of remote IT workers around the world sent their wages to North Korea, unwittingly contributing to the funding of the country’s weapons program

The revelation has raised concerns about the inadvertent support for a regime known for its nuclear ambitions and human rights violations.

According to the FBI, these remote IT workers were employed by companies that outsourced their services to a North Korean entity, which was purportedly a front for the country’s government. Many of these workers were unaware of the ultimate destination of their wages, which were wired to North Korea through a series of intermediaries and shell companies.

This alarming discovery underscores the challenges of tracking and enforcing financial sanctions against North Korea, a nation already subject to stringent international sanctions due to its nuclear activities. It also highlights the importance of increased vigilance in the global financial system to prevent such inadvertent funding of potentially harmful regimes.

The FBI is actively investigating the matter, and international authorities are collaborating to address the issue, potentially leading to increased scrutiny of international financial transactions related to North Korea.
