South Africa may face repercussions for its stance on Russia

South Africa-US: The United States may abandon AGOA (African Growth and Opportunity Act)

Several US congressmen have urged Joe Biden’s administration to reconsider South Africa’s continued participation in AGOA.

Its goal is to help Sub-Saharan African economies and to improve economic links between the US and the area.

This group of politicians not only opposes South Africa’s foreign policy, but also contends that Africa’s most prosperous country is too developed to participate in the programme.

This comes as Bloomberg publishes pieces with headings like “Why South Africa Is on the Brink of Chaos,” which describe the country’s various problems.

AGOA is due to expire in 2025, and US authorities have previously stated that the criterion for picking beneficiaries may be changed.

South Africa supplies autos and agricultural products to the United States under the terms of the agreement. It exported $2.7 billion in products last year through AGOA and the so-called generalised system of preferences.
